30 June - 1 July in Moscow the third EU-Russia technical workshop on Kyoto implementation took place. The workshop was organised by the Russian Ministry of Economic Development and Trade together with the European Commission and with support from the Danish government and the EU-Russia Energy Technology Centre.
There is a significant interest in buying credits from emission reduction projects under the Kyoto Protocol in Russia. This was confirmed at a two-day workshop by participants from the EU, EBRD, the World Bank and the Nordic Investment Bank in Moscow. More than 70 experts from government in Russia and the EU shared technical information and discussed ways of fostering co-operation on Kyoto implementation in Russia and the EU. The workshop addressed EU and Russia policies for applying the Kyoto mechanisms, in particular Joint Implementation and emissions trading, and the technical requirements that countries need to meet in order to participate fully in these Kyoto mechanisms. The Moscow workshop also marked the start of the EU-Russia Working Group on Climate Change which is being established between the Russian government and the European Commission as part of the EU-Russia Common Economic Space.
